Things To Do In Maun

Things To Do In Maun

To save time both for me writing and you reading large heaps of text, there is this section on the homepage that lists all services in Maun, but to go directly to activities check here: https://maunblog.com/places/category/activities-1/.

As for my opinion on activities in Maun, to a tourist, the best of what Maun can offer is outside of Maun *hint hint begins with the letter O, check tour listings here, but to a local, the only place of interest is the river, which is why Maun had a decline in economy last year(2019) due to low levels of domestic tourism, as the local economy is driven by domestic tourism. But all the activities listed in the above link are what Maun can offer in terms of keeping you occupied or when you don't have enough deep pockets to head into the Okavango Delta or Moremi Game Reserve. Also don't forget Maun now has its own craft brewery, raise a glass to that, it's going to get colorful, stay tuned...

Moremi Day Trips

Moremi Day Trips

Well all know the history of Moremi, tribal land, animal protection, yada yada yada yada, but all this is not as important as what Moremi is known for. A place of contrast they must tell you, Botswana being highly dominated by the Kalahari Desert, Moremi gives out that contrast very well with sandy roads and wetlands... ehhhm the Okavango comes to mind, you'll also find Bayei and Banoka tribes here, Banoka also known as River-dwelling Khoesan, and Bayei originating from the southern parts of Zambia, what this tribes have is wealth of knowledge about the wetlands, as both are river-dwelling tribes who are known for being nomads. Guides servicing Moremi are normally affiliated to tribal villages that reside around Moremi and some even in the Okavango Delta itself. In all truths, a Moremi trip is the quintessential definition of a Botswana safari trip and here are a few that can spark your interest.

Okavango Mokoro and Boat Trips

The Okavango By Mokoro Or Boatcruise

With the Okavango Delta being a watery world, it would seem quite obvious to choose a water vessel as the only means of transportation. And guess what, Maun is connected with the Okavango Delta via the Boro River, which makes it quite convenient when choosing a boat or mokoro as a transportation form of choice, or so to speak.

Now operators can ferry you directly from Maun via the Thamalakane River into the Boro River and finally the delta, or you can be driven to Boro village aka DRC, a village just a mere 20 km's from Maun, where you'll do much the same.

But what are the benefits of touring the Okavango like that, you ask, well, the other mode of transport into the delta is by airplane or helicopter, where you can go on scenic flights and all, but those normally last up to 45 minutes to an hour and are good when you don't have a lot of time and just want to take in as much as you can. The other obvious benefit is that you're much closer to it all, the wildlife, the water, the culture, everything. So go ahead take a look at this tours we put together that are bookable online, you won't regret touring the delta this way.

First Blog Post

First Blog Post

There you have it, the first post in months about Maun, and its about a hippo that raided a family pool. You see, Maun was, well the whole of Southern Africa was hit by low rains in the 2018/2019 rainy season, that meant the Okavango didn't flow as much as it had to, and semi-aquatic animals like hippos had to find water elsewhere in order to cool off from the high summer temperatures, even if that meant raiding a family pool. Rather we will let you experience it yourself in the video below.
